Will Rogers Silent Film Classics - Volume Three
Starring Will Rogers

The Headless Horseman
In Washington Irving’s familiar tale, schoolmaster Ichabod Crane (Rogers) arrives in a small village where his romancing of Katrina (Lois Meredith), the daughter of a wealthy landowner, provokes a rival, Brom Bones (Ben Hendricks, Jr.). Bones tries to scare Crane with tales of the Headless Horseman. Indeed, Crane encounters the figure on a late-night ride. He tries to outrace him, but the Headless Horseman tosses his head at Crane and so frightens him that the schoolmaster flees the town, never to be seen again. (Sleepy Hollow Corporation, 1922; 56 min.)

Going to Congress
In a back-room selection, political bosses handpick unqualified and unknown Alfalfa Doolittle (Rogers) to be their party’s nominee for a seat in Congress. Doolittle campaigns on a promise to bring rain to farmers and wins the election. The closing scene shows him arriving at the steps of the U.S. Capitol, setting the stage for two more comedy shorts featuring Rogers and his slant on politics. (Hal Roach Studios, 1924; 22 min.; titles by Will Rogers)

Our Congressman
Alfalfa Doolittle arrives in Washington to assume his seat in Congress. He and his family soon begin to struggle from their lack of the social graces, leading to hilarious moments while dining, trying to play golf, and learning the ins and outs of Washington. More laughs come when conniving newspaper reporters convince Alfalfa that he is vital to the country’s future. (Hal Roach Studios, 1924; 19 min.; titles by Will Rogers)

A Truthful Liar
Home for a visit and surrounded by his admiring neighbors, Congressman Doolittle entertains them with improbable tales of his service as a cowboy-attired ambassador. With great gusto he describes greeting the king (Richard Pennell) with a slap on the back, saving the monarch from an attempt on his life, and even winning his crown in a card game. Feeling disbelief among his friends, Doolittle proclaims that if he had uttered even one untruth, then the chimney of the building in which they stand should fall on him, which immediately happens. (Hal Roach Studios, 1924; 19 min.)
