Remembering November 4, 1938

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the opening of the Will Rogers Memorial in Claremore. Four days of events starting with a Saturday, Nov. 1 parade will focus on the life and times of Will Rogers. Born to an Indian Territory Cherokee family, he grew to fame as a trick roper, performer on stage and screen, writer, speaker and political pundit.

When he was killed Aug. 15, 1935 in an Alaskan plane crash, he was the highest paid movie actor in America.

We Need YOUR Help!

As a part of this year’s celebration, the Will Rogers Memorial Museum will collect stories and remembrances of people who participated in or recall construction or the 1938 dedication of the Claremore Memorial. If you or a family member will be willing to share recollections, please contact the Museum at 918-343-8129 or 918-906-7258 (leave a number) and someone will make a personal contact.

Plans are also being made to recognize these families in the Will Rogers Days celebration.
